I'll start out with the idea, and then put in text to alleviate knee jerk responses.
It seems to be that there are some relatively cheap and easy ways to help the city gain a little more money without raising taxes and without hiring more police. One thing that may help would be the Troy Corp idea I have already mentioned. I'd like to start that but that would be a big effort.
Until then I thought there could be a few, low labor, low cost ways to help out. Here is one I was thinking of.
Here on River Street perhaps 5-10 times a day, someone comes up congress and turns the wrong way onto river street. Then instead of actually admitting the mistake they continue past the garage until state street where they make a turn to be legal again.
Seems to me a camera placed to capture the license plate of these cars could be placed there, the pictures gathered every night, and tickets could be issued to car owners. I think that for a 2000 dollar investment, tens of thousands of dollars could be taken in from this one street alone.
I think its best if this action were installed and monitored by a troy citizen (and I would be happy to do it, because I live here and can stand the idea of my daughter not looking both ways and getting hit by a car).
Anyway, so people don't like surveillance. My first reaction is: get used to it. Camera surveillance is already in place. Knowing this, wouldn't it be better if the act of surveillance was public and the images available to everyone and not just some faction of the authorities?
But to get this project started a couple of things would have to happen as I see it. A law would have to be put in place that would make it legal for this camera to be used to issue tickets. Second, the money would have to be made available to have this weather proof camere set up, wirelessly transmit pictures to a server and the webpage, for anyone to look at would have to be made. Lastly the ticket issuing system would have to be worked out with the police/city hall.
The sidewalk and roads are a public place and everyone needs to play in the sandbox together. There is really no reason to not do something like this, and good financial reasons to implement it. I would love to see more discretionary money getting into the city coffers for better park maintenance, and so forth. But we have been taxes enough. Lets get the people who break the law to help out.
Does anyone know where to start? A city council person?
