Troy Business Association

When I used to work in downtown Saratoga, the company I worked with was part of the downtown business association. One of the nice perks of being a part of the association was that all of the businesses that participated provided discounts to other business. Some 10%, some more. The businesses were creative, and able to offer all kinds of different discounts or special offers for anyone that participated in the program.

I think this would be a great thing to do in Troy (if it's not happening already). It could be done all throughout the city as well, not just the downtown.

What do others think? I'd be willing to work on making this happen.

There is currently an effort to organize a downtown Business Improvement Distrtict (BID). But that's not really the same as what is being suggested (it sounds like a great idea, though).

In some ways this is a bit like the Berkshares (http://www.berkshares.org/localcurrency.htm) but in a much less formal way

One of the sites that I use 1. because it represents some of my political interests, and 2. because it is extremely flexible, is DailyKos. I realize that to try to implement all of the elements of Daily Kos is impractical because of the cost, still, it provides a model of a very successful blog. There is an in house wiki, a place for individual diaries, and a way to highlight very current or important ideas. Just a thought

I like this idea as well. Would there be a cost to the businesses to join?

Berkshares is great, and this would be awesome to do here in Troy.

I would think there would need to be some kind of minimal yearly cost for the businesses, to cover the cost of having the membership cards made up, promotional materials, etc.

Yeah, good point. I checked out the link to the Saratoga application and they charge $250/year for membership. Seems completely reasonable to me.

Yeah, I think $250/year is absolutely reasonable. Especially if there is a listing (some advertising), and the benefits of the discounts.

It's just a matter of getting multiple businesses to sign up.

Perhaps contacting some of the folks who started Troy night out (I know elizabeth from Living Room was one of them) may be useful. That was a major undertaking that already involves most of the businesses in down town.
