Did anyone notice the Best Western sign (at Fifth or Sixth Ave.) has now been covered? RPI owns it now and wants to convert it to freshmen dorms. Although the Best Western was an eyesore, I'm not sure RPI should convert it to student housing. I would have rather seen it torn down to provide better access to The Approach, the million-dollar staircase that connects RPI to downtown Troy. Tonight at 6 p.m., the planning board is hearing proposals for what RPI will do with that building, and neighbors at the downtowntroy yahoo group have suggested showing up to voice a new idea: getting rid of some of the parking lot in order to provide a better, more direct, public access to The Approach. Great idea, I think.
