I agree that the location is important. If there's any way to make the building safe and whole, I think that should be pursued before just giving up on it. If not, I think we should move the offices to temporary locations (perhaps all that empty space in the Atrium?), take the building down as planned, and build something more modest, affordable, and enduring in its place as a new city hall.

I agree that moving city hall has social repercussions. However, depending on what was put in its place, it could be a good thing.

It's kind of hard to imagine city hall not being on the square, but if there was another community type center, something that brought the members of the city together it could be a good thing.

I do also like the idea of building a new city hall in it's place (though my pocket book may not).

To All Troy Residents:

As you are probably aware, the City Council is in the process of forming a special committee to review the sale of City Hall. The committee will be comprised of nine individuals, five of whom have already been selected. The four remaining positions will be filled by two field experts (real estate, engineering, architecture, finance, etc.) and two other citizens of Troy. In addition, the committee will utilize panels of experts in the aforementioned disciplines to provide further focused input.

If you are interested in applying to become a member of the committee or one of its panels, please send an e-mail to:

Your e-mail should contain your full name, address, phone number(s), and a short blurb about yourself. If you are a field expert, please include a description of your background, especially any experience that relates to the proposal that we will be reviewing. If you have a resume in digital form, feel free to attach it to your e-mail.

For those who are interested in one of the four remaining committee slots, we ask that you respond by 1:00pm on Thursday, January 17, 2008, so that the list of interested persons can be presented at the Thursday evening Planning Committee meeting.

The decisions that we make in the upcoming months will affect the landscape of our city for generations to come. This is your opportunity to be involved in a very exciting process that will define the future of Troy.

You are encouraged to forward this e-mail to all mailing lists throughout the city (and we apologize in advance if you receive multiple copies.) Neighborhood leaders, please reach out to those in your groups who do not have access to e-mail.

I'm sorry I didn't respond sooner. I think the decision has been made. I do know my neighbor, Charle-Pan Dawson, of Troy's Think First neighborhood is on the city hall sale/review committee. She is committed to energy issues and will be a great voice for residents of downtown neighborhoods.
