There are some pics of different neighborhoods on google maps (maps.google.com)--search for Troy, NY then click on "My Maps" and then check the Panoramio and/or Picasa Web Albums layers. You'll get small thumbnails that will help you get a sense for some of the neighborhoods.

There are a lot of downtown programs for kids too--the CYO on 4th St (518) 274-2630 has after school sports and mentoring for a pretty wide variety of ages. The local paper, the Times Union, has some pretty in-depth blogs on local parenting and school resources as well.

The New York Theater Institute is located in Troy. They have an educational mission and they are closely connected with Sage College. During the summer they lead a wonderful youth theater training program.

One activity that is in the works but hasn't been discussed outside of a group at St. Paul's is a youth music training program. We are currently considering starting the project with a summer music camp. New parents and other possible stake holders would be more than welcome in the formation stage. If interested, call St. Paul's and ask to be connected with John Pattison or Bob Kearny.
