This is an awesome idea! I love it.

There are lots of businesses both high tech and low tech (as you mention) that could benefit from this.

The property owners could add value to the offering by providing marketing and advertising services as well, in addition to the space and a staffed cashier.

That way, when the businesses out grow that space, the property owners can offer them additional incentives to continue maintaining the relationship, and move into a different space that they own.

This is really a great idea DHR. Let's make it happen!

Bournebrook Antiques on River Street already works in much the way you describe for low-tech; there are a few cashiers at the center but most of the antiques and such actually belong to dealers (e.g. Botanical Bog) that rent display space.

You're right Alex, I forgot that was the case at Bournebrook.

I remember wanting to negotiate a price on some chairs, and the cashiers looked up the dealer, and he was actually down the street and came down to talk with us.

Bournebrook is a fantastic place, and a great example of this concept at work.

I think this should be something that other property owners, specifically those with empty storefronts, or unused space should begin doing.

I think there are a lot of small businesses, artists, etc, that would take advantage of this.

We should work together to try and make this happen.

I can think of a handful of people right now that I know, that would probably be willing to pay a nominal monthly fee to showcase some of their products, and artwork.

This really is a great idea. Does anyone here own a storefront downtown? If so, what is your take?

I have a storefont in my building (I rent it to bournebrook). I dont really see any issues with this idea except for space. The main bournbrook store is huge with more space if he needs to expand. My storefont, even if it were not occupied could not handle this.

the building next to me has been vacant for a decade. Someone recently bought it (yay!) and has plans to renovate it. Perhaps seeing if he will provide space for a project like this may work out. That building is totally vacant, 20-25K sq ft. I dont know his name however.

As for high tech.. the RPI incubator works exactly as you describe. There is one copy machine and secretary shared by multiple businesses who rent spaces as small as 200 sq ft.
